The winners of the New Zealand Architecture Awards 2014 have been announced. The winner of the 2014 New Zealand Architecture Medal, the most prestigious award building award in New Zealand, was BVN Donovan Hill and Jasmax, for their ASB North Wharf building. Patrick Clifford was also awarded with the New Zealand Institute of Architects Gold Medal for his career as director of Architectus, with the jury commending the "understated confidence" and "urbane and assured authority" of his work.
Another 16 projects also received awards in 9 categories. Read on after the break for the full list of winners.
New Zealand Architecture Medal winner
In addition to winning the top award, ASB North Wharf by BVN Donovan Hill and Jasmax received awards for commercial architecture, interior architecture and sustainability, confirming its status as a complete design. The jury described it as "an ambitious experiment in commercial architecture", adding that "It is a totally integrated project – an architectural realisation of a workplace philosophy, an exemplar of environmentally sustainable design and a contextually aware presence in a new maritime environment.
"Banking is traditionally a business in which people know their place and keep to it. At ASB North Wharf, employees are encouraged to find their place and use it for a particular time or task. The result is an exuberant workplace with a variety of spaces for big and small meetings, private work and social interaction."
New Zealand Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipient
The Gold Medal, New Zealand's lifetime achievement award, went to Patrick Clifford from Architectus Bowes Clifford Thomson, who was described by Ian Athfield as "the most consummate architect I know. Fellow Gold Medal winner Marshall Cook also gave high praise, saying that Architectus is one of the most significant New Zealand practices in a generation, saying they have "been leading the change in the quality of our architecture."
Architectus also had another victory on the night, with their Campus Hub and Library Upgrade at Victoria University of Wellington, designed in collaboration with Athfield Architects, winning an education award.
